About Living Earth
In one sentence. Living Earth shows our planet as it looks from space right now, with live clouds, storms and the weather in the places you care about.
Short. Living Earth is a 3D globe of our planet, with real satellite clouds refreshed every hour. Watch day turn to night across the globe and follow hurricanes and typhoons around the world. Add your cities to see the local time and weather, with hourly and 10-day forecasts.
Long. Living Earth shows our planet in motion, with satellite clouds refreshed every hour, sunrise sweeping across the globe and city lights coming on as darkness falls. Explore mountains, rivers and coastlines, with borders and place names appearing as you zoom in, or search for any place on Earth.
Living Earth is also a world clock and weather app. Save cities to keep track of the time and weather at home or abroad, with hourly and 10-day forecasts. Explore maps of temperature, humidity and wind, and follow hurricanes and typhoons with notifications when a storm forms or changes strength.
The app tracks solar and lunar eclipses and includes a Wake Alarm with repeat days, snooze and a choice of gentle tones.
A single $5.99 purchase covers iPhone and iPad, with no subscription, ads or tracking.
What’s new in 4.50
Living Earth 4.50 is a free update for existing users, and the first version for iPhone Duo.
- iPhone Duo. Unfold it and the Earth spreads across the inner display. When folded, the cover screen shows the globe, clock and weather.
- A more detailed globe. Zoom in to see sharper clouds, terrain and city lights.
- Borders and place names appear as you get closer. Tap a city’s name to see the weather there.
- Search finds any place on Earth and zooms the globe in to show its weather.
- Expanded daily forecasts. View hourly conditions for each day in the 10-day forecast, with full charts in Details.
- Also: new controls for Search, Layers, Storms and Weather Labels, a Tip Jar, and better support for VoiceOver, Switch Control and larger text. It opens faster, too.
What it does
- Real clouds, every hour. Images from weather satellites cover the whole globe, in near real time.
- Day and night, live. The sunrise sweeps the planet as it happens, and city lights come on as darkness falls.
- Hurricanes and typhoons. Tropical storms anywhere in the world, with each one’s category, winds, and direction and speed of travel. A notification arrives when a new one forms or changes strength.
- A world clock with a view. The time and weather in each of your cities at a glance, with hourly and 10-day forecasts.
- From orbit to coastline. Zoom in to see clouds, mountains and rivers, with borders and place names appearing as you get closer.
- The Moon and eclipses. The Moon’s shadow racing across the Earth during a solar eclipse, the Moon turning red in a lunar one, and a notification when a total eclipse begins. The Moon shows its current phase against the stars and the Milky Way.

About the developer
Living Earth is the work of independent developer Moshen Chan of Radiantlabs in San Francisco. A coder by day and an amateur astronomer and astrophotographer by night, Moshen keeps building and refining the app for the love of space and weather.
Where the data comes from
- Clouds: images from geostationary weather satellites run by NOAA and the Japan Meteorological Agency, made into a global map every hour.
- Forecasts and conditions: CustomWeather.
- The Earth: NASA’s Blue Marble by day and Black Marble by night.
- Privacy: no accounts, no ads and no tracking, and Radiantlabs never sells anyone’s data.
